I’ve taken very few progress photos or videos over the last several months, but I have SO many finished projects that I look forward to sharing to brighten up the dreary winter months ahead! 🌬️

I heard the loveliest line in my audiobook the other day: “That’s the thing about flowers, isn’t it? They’re lush and extravagant and demand your attention, and you think they’re the most exquisite thing. But then, in the shortest time, they’re not very lovely at all. They wilt, and they turn the water brown. And soon you can’t hold onto them any longer.” One Day in December, Josie Silver I had to stop what I was doing and replay the words several times over. These words fully explained why I turned towards flower preservation. It’s never been easy for me to toss flowers. I’ll hold onto them until they’ve dried (and molded) because I never want to part with them, even when their lifecycle has ended. But the art of pressing flowers has allowed me to hold onto that beauty and sentiment. Now, they have a new, exquisite life to live.

I so lovingly got an account notification saying I haven’t posted in over a month, so here I am! The last couple of months have been tricky for me, some personal stuff, but also a big household change. My husband got a new job working from home, (honestly, yay!) but I was not prepared for how much that would change my work routine! I gutted my office for him, and have had my work space displaced and in limbo as we get ready to finish our basement. So to say the least, I’m a bit behind on everything, and social media went out the window. I might continue to be a bit more quiet as I work to catch up, but I’m still here, just working in the real, not digital, world.

Two years ago, I left my corporate, cubicle-dwelling job. I was burned out and had truly become a shell of myself. I knew I had to make a big change in order to become 💥me💥 again. The dream to have my own business had been rustling in my soul for years, but I hadn’t been able to put my finger on what that business would be. I have always been crafty, though, I never once considered art being part of my dream. (I fault myself for being too pragmatic at times.) Who becomes an artist? Not me. I don’t paint; I don’t draw. But when I began pressing flowers, I knew it was special. I knew I had found my purpose, and I couldn’t convince myself otherwise. Suddenly, like a jacket being zipped together, art and business became one. There was no turning back! I can’t believe how quickly Trykket Flowers has developed and flourished in the last two years. Take a peek into my process 🌝 When I start to glue an arrangement, I flip it over and work backwards. This helps me make the final arrangement as accurate to my original design as possible and layer the flowers the same way. One by one, each flower (and sometimes, each petal) is glued into place. I’m looking through my photos, and I surprise myself with how many good pictures go unshared. So many arrangements even go unshared! From start to finish, each arrangement takes about four months. Who doesn’t love a good Gerber Daisy? Even though I pressed and dried it, I have a hard time looking at it and not thinking it’s fresh. Perhaps, that’s what I love most about pressing flowers: preserving their moment in time. This arrangement was one of the coolest, and most challenging requests I had last year. Did you know I build all of my own presses? To buy a press similar to the ones I make can cost $50-100+ but thankfully, I’m not afraid of using a circular saw…🤓 When I load a press with flowers, it can take up to six weeks before everything is dry. The press gradually flattens the flowers, and in the end, it usually looks about half as full as it was when I first loaded it!

Do you see hearts in your life? I was recently listening to @themelrobbinspodcast and she challenges people to find hearts in their everyday lives. I have to tell you, whenever I see a heart, it feels like a hug, and so it’s always such a happy surprise when I find them in my flowers. “How long does it take you to press a bouquet?” Well, this one layer took ten minutes. Yes, truly! I really take my time. Flowers are both hardy and delicate, and depending on which flowers are in a bouquet will alter how slowly or quickly I work. A whole bouquet can take me several hours to deconstruct and press. A little while back, a friend taught me that art is to be uncovered instead of forced into creation. What an incredible concept! (And talk about a relief.) I guess it’s a little bit like The Invisible Hand in economics, but, for art. 🤪 When I started preserving flowers, I knew that the purpose was not to create something more beautiful than the flowers themselves, because that’s not possible. Instead, it would be my responsibility to honor their given beauty. So with each arrangement I make, I try to let the flowers guide me to where they are meant to be. Let their beauty speak for themselves.

Before a finished bouquet goes back to its home, I take so many pictures, but I try my best to avoid sharing them until the owner has their arrangement and has seen it. Sometimes I can’t avoid the impulse of posting anyway, but usually, I just completely forget about it and the pictures get lost into 13,866 other photos on my phone. (True current photo count.)
